How to Reach Munnar: Nearest Airport, Station and Road Route
Plan your Munnar trip with ease using this guide to the nearest airport, railway station, and best road routes, including travel tips for a smooth journey.
Here’s the first thing to know about how to reach Munnar: nothing gets you all the way there except a road. There’s no airport and no railway line in Munnar, so every trip ends with a winding 3 to 4 hour drive up from the plains through tea country. The good news? That drive is half the fun. Below, we’ve laid out the nearest airport, the nearest railway stations and the best road route from wherever you’re starting.

How to reach Munnar: the quick answer
The easiest way to reach Munnar is to fly or take a train to Kochi, then drive about 110 km (3.5 to 4 hours) up NH-85 via Kothamangalam and Adimali. Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport, and Aluva is the nearest well-connected railway station. If you’re coming from Tamil Nadu, Madurai or Coimbatore work too.
| Route | You arrive at | Distance to Munnar | Last leg by road | Best for |
| Air | Cochin International Airport (COK) | ~110 km | 3.5–4 hrs | Most travellers from other states |
| Air (alternative) | Madurai Airport (IXM) | ~150–160 km | ~4.5 hrs | Travellers already in Tamil Nadu |
| Train | Aluva Railway Station | ~110 km | 3.5–4 hrs | Budget and overnight-train travellers |
| Train (Tamil Nadu side) | Bodinayakanur (Bodi) | ~65–70 km | ~2–2.5 hrs | Travellers from Chennai or Madurai |
| Road | Kochi city | ~130 km | ~4 hrs | Families, groups, road-trippers |
Which airport is closest to Munnar?
Cochin International Airport (COK) at Nedumbassery is the closest airport to Munnar, about 110 km away. It has direct flights from almost every major Indian city plus the Gulf, which is why it’s the default for most trips.
From the airport, a taxi takes 3.5 to 4 hours. There’s no need to go into Kochi city first; the airport sits on the north side, close to Aluva and Angamaly, so you head straight east towards Kothamangalam. Expect to pay somewhere around ₹3,000 to ₹3,500 one way for a sedan, a bit more for an SUV or Tempo Traveller.
Two other airports are worth knowing:
- Madurai Airport (IXM): about 150 km as the crow flies, roughly 4.5 hours by road via Theni and Bodimettu. Handy if you’re combining Munnar with a temple trip in Tamil Nadu.
- Thiruvananthapuram Airport (TRV): around 270 km away. Only pick it if you’re already in the south of Kerala.
Our tip: book a flight that lands before 1 pm. That puts you in Munnar before dark, and trust us, you want to see those tea slopes on the way up, not drive the bends at night.
Is there a Munnar train? Nearest railway stations
No, there’s no Munnar train today. The narrow-gauge Kundala Valley Railway that once ran through Munnar was destroyed in the great flood of 1924 and never rebuilt. The nearest practical railway station is Aluva, about 110 km away.
Here’s how the stations stack up:
| Station | Distance to Munnar | Why pick it |
| Aluva (AWY) | ~110 km | Closest major stop; most long-distance Kerala trains halt here |
| Angamaly (AFK) | ~120 km | Good alternative, near the airport |
| Ernakulam Jn / Town (ERS / ERN) | ~125–130 km | Most trains start or end here |
| Bodinayakanur (BDNK), Tamil Nadu | ~65–70 km by road | Shortest road leg, but a steep ghat climb |
The Aluva route: our pick
Aluva is the one we’d choose. KSRTC buses to Munnar leave from the Aluva bus station, with the first at around 6:35 am and more roughly every 45 minutes to an hour after that. An ordinary bus costs under ₹200 and takes about 3.5 hours. A cab from the station will cost around ₹2,900 to ₹3,500.
The Bodinayakanur route: the underrated option
Coming from Chennai? Since June 2023, the Chennai Central–Bodinayakanur AC Superfast Express (20601/20602) has run all the way to Bodi, three days a week, via Madurai and Theni. The journey takes about 11 hours. From Bodi, it’s roughly 65–70 km to Munnar over the Bodimettu ghat, about 2 to 2.5 hours by cab. It’s a dramatic road, full of hairpin bends, so pack motion-sickness tablets if anyone in your group needs them.
Which route is better to Munnar by road?

The best road route to Munnar from Kochi is NH-85 (the Kochi–Dhanushkodi highway) via Kothamangalam, Neriamangalam and Adimali. It’s about 110 km from Aluva and takes 3.5 to 4 hours.
The way to Munnar on this route goes like this:
- Aluva or the airport to Kothamangalam (about 45 km): flat, busy, mostly town traffic.
- Kothamangalam to Neriamangalam: you cross the old arch bridge over the Periyar, built in 1935, and the road starts to climb.
- Neriamangalam to Adimali: waterfalls start showing up by the roadside, including Cheeyappara and Valara. Stop for chai and photos.
- Adimali to Munnar (about 30 km): tea estates on both sides. This is the prettiest and slowest bit.
A monsoon warning for NH-85
Parts of NH-85 around Adimali are under construction, and the stretch has had landslides. In July 2026, the Idukki District Collector asked tourists to avoid the section near Moolakadai during heavy rain and use the Old Munnar Road, turning towards Devikulam at the Sujata Inn junction. If you’re travelling between June and September, check local news or ask your host about road status the morning you set off.
Coming from Tamil Nadu by road
- From Coimbatore: about 160 km, around 5 hours, via Pollachi, Udumalpet and the Chinnar wildlife sanctuary. The forest stretch is lovely; watch for elephants.
- From Madurai: about 160 km, around 4.5 hours, via Theni and Bodimettu.
- From Thekkady: about 90 km, roughly 3 hours. Easy to pair the two on one trip.
My location to Munnar: distances from major cities
Wondering about the trip from your own location to Munnar? Here’s a rough guide. Road distances are approximate and depend on the route your maps app picks.
| Starting from | Best way to go to Munnar | Approx. total time |
| Kochi | Drive or bus via NH-85 | ~4 hrs |
| Bengaluru | Drive via Salem, Coimbatore, Pollachi (or fly to Kochi) | 10–12 hrs by road |
| Chennai | Train to Bodinayakanur, or fly to Kochi/Madurai | ~11 hrs by train + 2 hrs road |
| Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata | Fly to Kochi, then cab | Flight + 4 hrs |
| Coimbatore | Drive via Udumalpet and Chinnar | ~5 hrs |
| Alappuzha (Alleppey) | Drive via Kottayam or Kochi | ~4.5–5 hrs |
One friendly heads-up: Google Maps sometimes suggests narrow “shortcut” estate roads to save ten minutes. Stick to the main highway unless your driver knows the area well.
What is the best way to get to Munnar?
For most people, it’s this: fly into Kochi in the morning, book a cab straight from the airport, and you’ll be in Munnar by late afternoon. It’s the fastest door-to-door option from anywhere outside Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
A few quick rules of thumb:
- Travelling from far away? Fly to Kochi.
- On a budget? Train to Aluva, then the KSRTC bus.
- Coming from Chennai or Madurai? Try the Bodinayakanur train. It’s slower but scenic and a lot cheaper than flying.
- Group of 6 or more? Hire a Tempo Traveller. Split between everyone, it’s often cheaper per head than two cabs.
The mistake we see most often is people planning to “just drive up after dinner” from Kochi. Those last 30 km from Adimali are all bends, the fog rolls in by evening, and in monsoon there’s rain on top. Plan to arrive in daylight.
Which time is best for Munnar?
September to May is the best time to visit Munnar, with the most pleasant weather from November to February, when temperatures sit roughly between 10°C and 28°C. That’s also peak season, so book stays early for Christmas and New Year.
| Season | Months | What to expect |
| Winter | Nov–Feb | Cool, clear, misty mornings. Peak crowds |
| Summer | Mar–May | Warm days, cool nights. Good escape from the plains heat |
| Monsoon | Jun–Aug | Heavy rain, lush green, landslide risk on roads. Lowest prices |
| Post-monsoon | Sep–Oct | Green and fresher, fewer tourists. Some rain lingers |
Two things to plan around. Eravikulam National Park, home to the Nilgiri tahr, usually closes for a few weeks around February and March for the calving season, so check before you go. And the famous Neelakurinji blooms only once every 12 years; the last big bloom was in 2018, so the next one is expected around 2030.
Can I cover Munnar in one day?
You can do a Munnar day trip from Kochi, but we wouldn’t recommend it. That’s around 7 to 8 hours in a car for maybe 4 hours in Munnar itself, and you’d miss the best part: waking up to mist over the tea gardens.
Give it two nights at least, three if you can. That gives you one day for Eravikulam, the Tea Museum and Mattupetty Dam, and a second for Top Station, Echo Point or a lazy afternoon on a plantation walk.
How to plan a Munnar trip in 5 steps
- Pick your dates first. Avoid heavy-monsoon weeks if you’re nervous about hill roads.
- Choose your gateway. Kochi for most people, Madurai or Bodi from Tamil Nadu.
- Book the last leg in advance. A pre-booked cab from the airport or station saves haggling after a long journey.
- Stay two to three nights. Base yourself in or near Munnar town so the main sights are within an hour.
- Add a second stop. Thekkady (3 hours away) or the Alleppey backwaters (about 5 hours) make an easy combo.
Munnar or Ooty: which is better?
Pick Munnar if you want quieter, greener tea-estate scenery; pick Ooty if you want a classic hill-town holiday with the toy train. Both are great. They just feel different.
| Munnar | Ooty | |
| State | Kerala | Tamil Nadu |
| Altitude | ~1,600 m | ~2,240 m |
| Vibe | Rolling tea estates, quieter | Busier town, colonial feel |
| Signature experience | Eravikulam, Top Station, tea walks | Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Botanical Garden |
| Nearest airport | Kochi (~110 km) | Coimbatore (~90 km) |
| Entry note | No permit needed | Nilgiris e-pass required for tourist vehicles (check current rules) |
Our take? If it’s your first trip to the southern hills and you like nature over shopping, Munnar wins. Nearby Anamudi, at 2,695 m, is the highest peak in South India, and the views around Eravikulam are hard to beat.
